CITY OF ILLUSIONS: THE DOMINO EFFECT
This project enables me to reveal my interpretation of a city, how I uncovered findings that people do not pick up while walking my slice,
along the district of Bras Basah MRT station to the back of Parliament, near Singapore River.
STUDIO 04 PROJECT
introduction to my slice

I created a section view of my slice based on what I’ve observed and encountered. For every building/ location, I wrote a small write up about the surroundings, noise level and the amount of passer- bys found at the site.

These sets of data are taken with my phone and through my device, which then I “ decluttered” them
into different categories. I observed that with different coloured films, taken at the same space and layered on with the play of opacity of the images are able to show movements within the city.
With the kaleidoscope, I was able to view spaces differently through perspectives. With these perspectives and distorted fractures of the space, I was able to see specs of textures, colours and lines.
These datas created an interesting illusions through my captures. From these data i concluded,
my slice is a
city of illusions.

WHY FUNAN:
From my previous slice uncoverings and slice analysis, I realised that Funan consists of more foot traffic and activities compared to the other parts of my slice. The location is also surrounded by many other buildings with different purposes like confidential (government related), accommodation, worship, educational and retail. This makes Funan a central common space where different groups and walks of life can gather.

A linear structure consists of rectangular shaped elements that are bent and placed in different angles to create a frame that frames the chosen space. The structure resembled of dominos that are in the midst of being placed and knocked over, giving the overall structure movements within my design. People walking through my space may feel uncertain, anxiety and fear which is what normally felt when life goes on, forcing people to embrace; possibly out of their comfort zones to accept and adapt. It is further enhanced with the planned activities, consisting of elements, technology and experience.
